Fagaras Mountains
2017 - present day
Initiated by the Conservation Carpathia Foundation, this project aims to transform the Făgăraș Mountains and the surrounding areas, into the largest forest protected area in Europe. This would help to preserve many emblematic animal species of the Carpathians, but also to better preserve the primaeval and primary forests. At the same time, this project will help the creation of Făgăraș Mountains National Park which, together with other parks and protected areas in the area, such as Piatra Craiului, Bucegi, Leaota, Iezer and even Cozia and the national parks in Southwest Carpathians, would create a huge wilderness area, a real hotspot for European biodiversity.
I joined this project in 2017, and for two years I hiked almost the entire mountain to photograph the landscape, the specific fauna and flora, in all seasons. The photos are used by Conservation Carpathia Foundation to promote the wilderness of this place and to further fight to implement their overall vision of the Făgăraș Mountains.
A photo book about the Făgăraș Mountains was released in 2020, and now we are working on a documentary movie about the reintroduction of European bison and beaver that will be launched in 2024.
This project comes as a continuation to another activity that took place in the Făgăraș Mountains and which was coordinated by WWF România. In 2013, many of the rivers in these mountains were destroyed by the construction of micro-hydroelectric plants, and others were threatened, such as the Topolog River, one of the most important habitats for mountain ichthyofauna in Romania. In a joint effort, initiated by WWF and supported by National Geographic, I photographed the beauty of the mountain rivers, along with the destruction left behind by the plants. The campaign and the articles that followed managed to save the Topolog River from destruction. This achievement proved to me that photography can be an important tool in the fight for environmental protection and further motivated me to continue on this path.
